How to Choose a Drag Stretcher Size for Your Unit's Needs

"Which model should we get" is a question we hear in almost every other inquiry — and it's the right one to ask. Stretcher size directly affects evacuation speed, ease of carrying, and how well the wounded person is protected during dragging. The ARES lineup has three rigid models — S, M, and L — and each has its own niche. Let's break down, without unnecessary padding, which model fits which task.

1. ARES S (220×50 cm) — when compactness matters more than surface area

The narrowest model in the lineup. Its main advantage is that it easily attaches to gear or a backpack and can stay on you at all times, rather than sitting separately in a vehicle or at base. This is critical for reconnaissance and assault units, where every extra centimeter and gram counts.

The downside is the flip side of the advantage: a narrower base wraps the wounded person's sides less effectively, so for evacuating larger individuals or injuries requiring lateral support, wider models are worth considering.

2. ARES M (230×60 cm) — the versatile default choice

If you don't know which model to get, get this one. The M covers most scenarios: infantry evacuation, stocking medical vehicles, equipping evacuation teams. A 60 cm width provides enough space for secure fastening without being too bulky to carry through narrow passages, trenches, or vehicle doors.

3. ARES L (240×90 cm) — maximum protection where you have room to work with

The widest model offers the largest surface area for wrapping the wounded in a protective "cocoon" — maximum protection for the torso and head while being dragged over uneven terrain. This is the choice for medical points, stationary positions, and anywhere vehicle capacity or space isn't a limiting factor.

The trade-off is size itself: the L isn't convenient to carry on you at all times, and not every UGV or narrow passage is built for that width.

A tip from the field: if a unit is equipping once and stocking up, get the M as your main model, and buy S separately for recon teams and forward positions. This covers 90% of real-world scenarios without overpaying for capability you don't need.

Key takeaways

  • ARES S — for reconnaissance, assault teams, constant on-body carry.
  • ARES M — the versatile default choice for most units.
  • ARES L — maximum protection for medical points and stationary positions.
  • All three models support the same 250+ kg load — the difference is only in size and carrying convenience.
